Featured Link - Travel Tips

Whether you travel for business, pleasure, or both, flying seems to be a bigger hassle than ever before. That's where JohnnyJet comes to the rescue. This Web site is published by a fellow who travels practically nonstop, and has an enormous variety of travel tips and resources. Here's his sotry:

I started this newsletter/website for fun. It all began when I e-mailed a few friends who traveled a lot, and wanted to earn as many miles as I did. We competed to see who could accrue more miles, and after kicking their butts (I learned a lot traveling 150,000 miles a year for the past 10 years), I decided to be nice and help my friends out. My first e-mails told them what numbers to call so they could earn double miles or points. Each week I got more creative, adding new features like tips, web cams and helpful travel websites. My list grew and grew. I got e-mails from people I didn't even know, asking to be added to the distribution list. When my list reached 500 I decided to make a website. I felt there were many helpful, cool websites out in cyberspace, but not one of them had everything I needed. I had so many travel bookmarks and favorites that sometimes even I couldn't find what I was looking for. So I laid them all out, organized them, and voila: The Johnny Jet Portal! The website was designed to point travelers to everything the web has to offer. It doesn't matter if you travel five days a week, or once every five years. This site is for everyone! It has become the "first stop" for thousands of travelers. Those who contribute to Johnny Jet share my vision -- and I share theirs. Together, all of us get the inside scoop on how to do travel -- and how do it economically, comfortably, efficiently and with plenty of style. Don't forget to tell your family, friends and colleagues to sign up to our free Johnny Jet’s Travel News, Tips and Stories newsletter (at www.JohnnyJet.com) -- and to use our search engines when booking travel.

Link of the Day - Fee Dental Care At Baylor College Of Dentistry

This is going to be my final Link of the Day for a while. I'll continue to feature helpful links, but less frequently.

Unfortunately, many of our personal injury clients and Social Security disability claimants simply cannot afford proper medical care. The Baylor College of Dentistry helps somewhat by offering dental care to a limited number of patients. Here is information about qualifying for dental care:

How to Become a Patient

The first step to becoming a patient at Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry is to undergo a preliminary screening conducted by the dental school.  This screening will determine your treatment needs. In general, we accept patients needing comprehensive treatment as opposed to those who require a single procedure.  But sometimes even those with comprehensive treatment needs will not be assigned students.

Screening appointments are generally assigned on a first come, first serve basis. For more information about screening dates and times, please call 214-828-8441.

If you are “accepted” as a result of your initial screening, you will be assigned to one of two treatment tracks.

If your dental issues are fairly complex, you will be referred to one of our graduate specialty clinics.  There, you will undergo a second screening after which you will be notified if you are assigned to a graduate dental student. A $16.00 non-refundable fee is charged patients who are referred to specialty clinics.  The fee is non-refundable, even if you are not accepted for treatment.

If your dental issues are more general, you will be put on a list for possible treatment by an undergraduate.  Not everyone who is placed on this list is assigned to a student, however.  Should you be selected, you will receive a phone call to set up an appointment.  After 12 weeks, if you have not been assigned, you will receive a post card asking if you would like to remain on the list.  If you return the card, you will stay on the list another 12 weeks.  If you have not been assigned a student at the end of that time period, you will receive a letter notifying you to seek the services of a private dentist or be re-screened at a later date.

Link of the Day - Arc Of Dallas

The Arc of Dallas is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities. It was formed in 1951 by a group of parents who joined forces to fight for their children’s rights to be educated in the public school system. The Arc of today still serves as a voice in the local, state and national community. Here is information from their Web site:

The Arc of Dallas builds bridges to a better quality of life for tens of thousands of North Texans with intellectual and related developmental disabilities. This site will connect you to helpful information, people and services.

People with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities have the same basic legal, civil and human rights as other citizens.  They may need accommodation, protection and support to enable them to exercise these rights.   Their rights should never be limited or restricted without due process.

Advocacy.  Advocacy is essential in maintaining or improving the quality of life for people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities.

CriminalJustice.  People with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities, like other residents of the United States, have the right to justice and fair treatment in the criminal justice system, including reasonable accommodations as necessary.

Guardianship.  The majority of people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities can manage their own affairs with informal assistance and guidance from others, such as family and friends.  If guardianship< is necessary, it should be tailored to the person’s needs.  It must be adequately monitored to ensure that the best interests of the individual are protected.

Human and Civil Rights.  The human and civil rights of all people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities must be honored, protected, and enforced.

Inclusion.  All Americans gain when people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities are fully included in their communities.Protection.  People with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities must be protected from harm and injury and must have the tools and supports so that they can protect themselves.

Self Determination.  People with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities have the same right to self-determination as all people.  They must have opportunities and experiences that enable them to exert control in their lives and to advocate on their own behalf.

Link of the Day - Regiftable.com

OK, Christmas is over, and you absolutely love every gift you got, right? Yeah, me neither. Here's the answer for us: Regiftable.com. This is their story:

Why Regiftable.com?

The credit counselors at Money Management International (MMI) know that being in debt is no way to start the New Year. They created this Web site to help you get through the season with your budget and your sanity in tact.

Whether you are a fan or foe, regifting has become a phenomenon. Regifting experiences can range from resourcefully refined to a comedic disaster; it’s all about the five ‘Ws’ (who, what, when, where, & why). In our opinion, if you are going to do it, do it right! With this holiday season’s particularly tight budgets, it only makes sense to talk about all possible ways to stretch your resources.

In addition to regifting, the folks at MMI love to talk about pregifting, postgifting, ungifting, misgifting, multigifting and nongifting. In fact, the experts at MMI have developed materials that cover a wide range of topics; all to help you financially survive the holidays. So if your holiday debt typically outlasts your fruitcake, consider giving yourself a gift this holiday season; the gift of freedom from financial worries. (After all, the holidays are supposed to be fun!)

Link of the Day - End User License Agreement Analyzer

Do you ever take the time to read the end user license agreements (EULAs) that pop up each time you buy or download a software program online? No, neither do I. But now there's a free program that will read the EULA for you, and alert you to any tricky language. Just visit JavaCoolSoftware.com and get the program for free. Here's more information:

End user license agreements (EULAs) are the bane of most computer users.
No one wants to read through pages and pages of boring text before installing a program. And many programs put their license agreements in small windows that require lots of scrolling. So many people either skim them or skip reading them altogether.

But it can be dangerous not to read license agreements.
License agreements can provide information about the intentions of software, and other bundled components. Have you ever installed a program, only to have your desktop taken over by advertising? It may have been noted in the license agreement that you simply clicked past. If you aren't reading the license agreements, you have no idea what you could be agreeing to.

You should always read license agreements before agreeing to them.
But now there's a way of making that much easier.

EULAlyzer - Making it all easy

EULAlyzer can analyze license agreements in seconds, and provide a detailed listing of potentially interesting words and phrases. Discover if the software you're about to install displays pop-up ads, transmits personally identifiable information, uses unique identifiers to track you, or much much more.

The Benefits

  • Discover potentially hidden behavior about the software you're going to install
  • Pick up on things you missed when reading license agreements
  • Keep a saved database of the license agreements you view
  • Instant results - super-fast analysis in just a second

And with additional features like the EULA Research Center, which optionally allows users to anonymously submit license agreements they scan to help us to further improve the program, everyone can be a part of the effort to make something that used to be so tedious, so easy.

Link of the Day - Free Online File Backup

None of us backs up computer files as often as recommended, but there's a great free service that makes backing up both painless and automatic. You can get a completely free online backup of up to 2 GB from Mozy.com. That's not enough for all your photos and video, but it'll cover your spreadsheets and document files. If you want more storage, you can upgrade to a paid account. I've used Mozy for months, at the paid level, and it works great.

Remember, do request test restores. Otherwise you won't know until it's too late if you have a problem with your backups. Here are some of the Mozy features:

  • Open/locked file support: Mozy will back up your documents whether they're open or closed.
  • 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
  • 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.
  • Automatic: Schedule the times to back up and MozyHome does the rest.
  • New and changed file detection: MozyHome finds and saves the smallest changes.
  • Backs up Outlook files: Disaster-proof email protection.
  • Block-level incremental backup: After the initial backup, MozyHome only backs up files that have been added or changed, making subsequent backups lightning fast.

Link of the Day - Cornell University Law School Ethics Web Site

Do you have a question about legal ethics? You'll probably find your answer at the Cornell University Law School ethics Web site. Here's some info about the site:

Scope of the American Legal Ethics Library

This digital library contains both the codes or rules setting standards for the professional conduct of lawyers and commentary on the law governing lawyers, organized on a state by state basis.

Major law firms and legal academics, working on a pro bono basis, are contributing narratives on the law of lawyering of their states. As of Jan. 2006 the library includes narratives from 22 jurisdictions, including most of those with the largest lawyer populations.  It also includes the codes of professional responsibility for those jurisdictions, numerous other states, and the European Community. There are several additional states for which narratives are in progress.  More jurisdictions will be added as they are completed.

The American Bar Association's ethics materials are included in the library to permit the rules of a particular state to be compared with the ABA model provisions, including the extensive 2002 revisions, and with related provisions in other states.

About this blog's title

  • The title of this blog reflects my attitude toward those government agencies and insurance companies that routinely mistreat injured or disabled people. As a Dallas, Texas lawyer, I've spent almost 35 years trying to help those poor folk, and I have been frustrated daily by the actions of the people on the other side of their claims. (Sorry if I offended you...)
  • If you find this type of information interesting or helpful, please visit my law firm's main Web site at www.kraftlaw.com. You will find many more articles and links. I also invite you to subscribe to my firm's monthly e-mail newsletter. There is a link to the newsletters at the kraftlaw site. Thank you for your time.

Lawyers Inner Circle Group

  • Lawyers Inner Circle is a marketing and practice management think tank for personal injury lawyers.

Enrollment is limited to one firm per TV market area, but the topics the group discusses are definitely not limited to TV advertising. All aspects of marketing and of practice management are addressed.

Lawyers Inner Circle meets twice each year for three-day seminars with great speakers and even better roundtable discussions.

I have benefited greatly from my membership in Lawyers Inner Circle, and I highly recommend it to anyone who practices personal injury law (except in Dallas or Fort Worth -- your area is taken).

For more information, visit the Lawyers Inner Circle site at Lawyers Inner Circle.

Great Legal Marketing

  • Virginia lawyer Ben Glass not only has a thriving medical malpractice and personal injury practice, he is perhaps the best small law firm marketer in the country.

Ben has produced a complete marketing plan for personal injury law firms, and he explains his plan and related products in a free 60-page report. You can order the free report by visiting Great Legal Marketing.

I very highly recommend this marketing plan. It was written with personal injury lawyers in mind, but after reading his materials, I believe almost all of his ideas and suggestions would apply equally to lawyers in almost any practice area. This is a great package.
