Link of the Day - PrivacySpot Blog

For the month of September, I am going to use my Link of the Day feature to highlight legal blogs that I think are interesting and useful. Some may not be directly related to personal injury or Social Security disability law, but all of us who represent injured and disabled people occasionally need help in other areas. Some are new, and some have been mentioned here before. Today's entry is:

Is there any privacy left in the Internet Age? The place to find out is the PrivacySpot Blog. This blog is sponsored by the Texas law firm of Hughes & Luce, and includes news and information about privacy in the new world of technology and data mining. Very interesting, and frightening, material here.

Link of the Day - Texas Nurse Attorney's Blog

For the month of September, I am going to use my Link of the Day feature to highlight legal blogs that I think are interesting and useful. Some may not be directly related to personal injury or Social Security disability law, but all of us who represent injured and disabled people occasionally need help in other areas. Link of the Day - TortDeform Blog

TortDeform.com, the Civil Justice Defense Blog, confronts and transcends the arguments put forth by the tort "reform" movement, working to ensure that all Americans can access the courts. The TortDeform blog is a project of Drum Major Institute. Here is their description:

The Drum Major Institute for Public Policy is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to challenging the tired orthodoxies of both the right and the left. The goal: progressive public policy for social and economic fairness. DMI's approach is unwavering: We do not issue reports to see our name in print or hold forums for the sake of mere talk. We seek to change policy by conducting research into overlooked, but important social and economic issues, by leveraging our strategic relationships to engage policymakers and opinion leaders in our work, and by offering platforms to amplify the ideas of those who are working for social and economic fairness.

Link of the Day - Bag And Baggage Blog

For the month of September, I am going to use my Link of the Day feature to highlight legal blogs that I think are interesting and useful. Some may not be directly related to personal injury or Social Security disability law, but all of us who represent injured and disabled people occasionally need help in other areas. Some are new, and some have been mentioned here before. Today's entry is:

It's only through a terrible oversight that I have never featured one of the premier, and pioneering,  legal blogs here. Newport Beach attorney Denise Howard writes Bag and Baggage, which should be read frequently by lawyers in any practice area. Here is her description of herself and her blog:

I am an appellate, intellectual property and technology lawyer (professional background).*

Though I am originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I now live in Newport Beach. While at UCLA (B.A. 1987), I majored in English and earned departmental honors for a thesis on the works of T.S. Eliot. After college, my interests took a more South Campus turn. I began studying computers and technological issues while I earned my law degree from Boalt Hall in Berkeley (J.D. 1990). Today, I am likely to be listening to a podcast, particularly one of the legal variety. I also write Lawgarithms, contribute to Between Lawyers, host an audio series at TWiT.tv called this WEEK in LAW, host another audio series at IT Conversations called Sound Policy, and have a little fun on Vox. My father is a lawyer turned author, whose work I will plug at any opportunity.

Link of the Day - As The Island Floats

For the month of September, I am going to use my Link of the Day feature to highlight legal blogs that I think are interesting and useful. Some may not be directly related to personal injury or Social Security disability law, but all of us who represent injured and disabled people occasionally need help in other areas. Some are new, and some have been mentioned here before. Today's entry is:

Judge Susan Criss is the judge of the 212th District Court in Galveston, Texas. Judge Criss writes about justice and life on an island off of the Texas Gulf Coast in the blog As The Island Floats. She presides over a court that handles criminal and civil cases. Judge Criss serves as Chairman of the Gulf Coast MHMR Task Force for Jail Diversion for the Mentally Ill. For more information about her see www.judgecriss.com and www.co.galveston.tx.us/judgecriss.

Here is a portion of her first post, which describes the purpose of the blog:

I am a trial court judge. I will be posting about justice and life on an island off of the Texas Gulf Coast.

The Judicial Code of Conduct limits my ablity to discuss pending litigation in my court. I have to refrain from expressing opinions about subjects that could lead to my being recused from hearing certain lawsuits.

Don't assume that you can guess how I will rule on matters in court based on what you read here. Every case has a unique set of facts. Lawsuits have to be decided on those specific facts and the laws that pertain to those facts. I can never presume that the lawyers won't bring up some new aspect to a case that I had not previously considered.

That is one of the many things that make my job so fascinating. Just when you think you have heard it all you get surprised again!

Don't worry though. The justice system and courthouse will still leave many things to cover.

Link of the Day - Litigating MIST Cases Blog

For the month of September, I am going to use my Link of the Day feature to highlight legal blogs that I think are interesting and useful. Some may not be directly related to personal injury or Social Security disability law, but all of us who represent injured and disabled people occasionally need help in other areas. Some are new, and some have been mentioned here before. Today's entry is:

My friend Jonathan Stein has written an excellent book about Minimum Impact, Soft Tissue automobile collision claims, and how to handle those cases in a way to maximize the client's financial recovery. I very, very highly recommend the book, which is available online from Jonathan's Litigating MIST Cases blog.

I've been handling car wreck cases for more than 36 years now, and I still learned many helpful tips from this book. If you do any auto collision work at all, it's well worth the cost.

(I'm mentioning this site today because this is Jonathan's birthday. Send him an e-mail at jonathan@jonathangstein.com.)

About this blog's title

  • The title of this blog reflects my attitude toward those government agencies and insurance companies that routinely mistreat injured or disabled people. As a Dallas, Texas lawyer, I've spent almost 35 years trying to help those poor folk, and I have been frustrated daily by the actions of the people on the other side of their claims. (Sorry if I offended you...)

Lawyers Inner Circle Group

  • Lawyers Inner Circle is a marketing and practice management think tank for personal injury lawyers.

Enrollment is limited to one firm per TV market area, but the topics the group discusses are definitely not limited to TV advertising. All aspects of marketing and of practice management are addressed.

Lawyers Inner Circle meets twice each year for three-day seminars with great speakers and even better roundtable discussions.

I have benefited greatly from my membership in Lawyers Inner Circle, and I highly recommend it to anyone who practices personal injury law (except in Dallas or Fort Worth -- your area is taken).

For more information, visit the Lawyers Inner Circle site at Lawyers Inner Circle.

Great Legal Marketing

  • Virginia lawyer Ben Glass not only has a thriving medical malpractice and personal injury practice, he is perhaps the best small law firm marketer in the country.

Ben has produced a complete marketing plan for personal injury law firms, and he explains his plan and related products in a free 60-page report. You can order the free report by visiting Great Legal Marketing.

I very highly recommend this marketing plan. It was written with personal injury lawyers in mind, but after reading his materials, I believe almost all of his ideas and suggestions would apply equally to lawyers in almost any practice area. This is a great package.
