The “I Have A Dream” Speech

It is difficult to comprehend the profound impact on millions of people that a 16-minute speech delivered almost 50 years ago has had. We need to listen to this speech more often than once per year. Here are links to the text and to the audio.
Please take a few minutes on Martin Luther King, Jr. [...]

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope each of you has a wonderful day today, surrounded by friends and family and giving thanks for the many blessings we have.

How Hot Has It Been In Texas?

The official numbers are in, and Texas now holds the record for the hottest summer months ever recorded by any state in U.S. history. The government didn’t really have to waste time doing the calculations — they could have just asked any of us down here. As reported by Reuters:
This year’s scorching Texas summer heat, [...]

Happy 4th of July!

I hope you get to have fun with friends and family today, but please remember why this is a holiday. You can read all about Independence Day at Wikipedia.

Pros and Cons of Settling Out of Court

This guest post is contributed by Chris Jacobson who writes on the topic of Criminal Justice Degree Online . Chris can be reached at his e-mail id: chris.jacobson7-AT-gmail-Dot-com
No one really wants to go to court and go through the long and often messy process that is a trial, but when it comes to claiming what’s rightfully [...]

Motorized Wheelchair Collisions Result in Lawsuits

I’m not advocating lawsuits against our senior citizens, but this story in the Chicago Tribune sounds exactly like a situation that happened recently at a Dallas assisted living facility. The victim in Dallas was seriously injured. Perhaps facilities should conduct training courses for residents who use motorized wheelchairs. Those devices can move pretty fast, and [...]

Merry Christmas!

Here’s wishing a very Merry Christmas (or whatever other holiday you may be celebrating) to all my friends. I love this Nativity Story for the millenial generation:

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope each of you has a happy Thanksgiving, with family and friends around you. Drive safely if you’re traveling, take your time, rest if you get sleepy, and always buckle up everyone in your vehicle.

Memorial Day History

The Web site USMemorialDay.org has an interesting section on the history of Memorial Day. As we pause today to honor our veterans, the history of this day is important. This is the opening section of the Web page:
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our [...]

Featured Link – Today is “Be Kind To Lawyers Day”

It’s about time the poor mistreated lawyers in America got our own day, and today is it!
Lawyers in America get a lot of grief…just for being lawyers. Jokes are made about them and they consistently rank as one of the least respected professions on the planet.
Yet, when regular people need help writing a will, [...]

Featured Link – Top 50 Newspaper Blogs

I worked my way through college and law school at a newspaper, and it saddens me to see the current loss of readership. I hope papers can find a business model that allows them to survive. That will almost certainly include some form of online information, so I was interested to see this list of [...]

No Settlement in $58,000,000 Judgment Against Homebuilder Bob Perry

The seemingly endless lawsuit between two homeowners and their builder will continue, now that post-verdict mediation has failed. An article in the New York Times reports that settlement discussions have broken down between Robert and Jane Cull, and Perry Homes. This is a very long tale to tell, and I won’t repeat it here, but [...]

A Sad Personal Note

Since starting this blog in April of 2005 this is the longest I’ve gone between posts. My father has become suddenly and gravely ill. The family is still in shock, and most daily activities have been suspended. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers in his final days. Thank you.

Best Halloween Costumes?

Happy Halloween everyone! These guys wearing flat-screen displays attached to their iPhones have my favorite costumes of the year.

It Was 30 Years Ago Today…

Today is our law firm’s 30th anniversary. Over those years we’ve helped literally tens of thousands of people with their legal problems, and I am very proud of that. I’m also proud to have worked with some of the best lawyers and staff anywhere. Fortunately, many of those great people are still here at Kraft [...]

Happy Labor Day!

As we have picnics, play golf, or otherwise celebrate the holiday, let’s remember the original purpose — to honor trade and labor organizations. Here is an excerpt from the Wikipedia entry on Labor Day:
Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 7 in 2009).
The holiday originated in [...]

Piloting Medical Helicopters Is One Of The Most Dangerous Jobs

The Washington Post has a very interesting article about the medical transport helicopter business. Alarmingly, this “multibillion-dollar air-medical business” is “now one of the most dangerous jobs in America…with 113 deaths for every 100,000 employees.” Here are a few more excerpts from the article:
The number of fatal flights has risen sharply, closely tracking the rapid [...]
